Developmental disabilities are part of the diverse ways people grow and experience the world. Factors like genetics, prenatal health, early life experiences, and significant medical events shape who we are, and sometimes influence areas like communication, learning, mobility, and daily living.
Most developmental disabilities emerge before age 22, but some can appear later due to illness, trauma, or life circumstances. Every person’s experience is unique, and no two individuals are alike.
Common Types of Developmental Disabilities:
Intellectual Disability – Challenges with learning, reasoning, and problem-solving.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – Differences in social communication and behaviour.
Cerebral Palsy – Impacts on movement, balance, and posture.
Down Syndrome – Genetic differences affecting cognitive and physical development.
ADHD – Challenges with attention, impulse control, and sometimes emotional regulation.
Fragile X Syndrome – A Genetic condition with intellectual disability and autism-like characteristics.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders – Impact from alcohol exposure during pregnancy.
Spina Bifida – Physical disability related to spine development.
Muscular Dystrophy – A Genetic condition causing progressive muscle weakness.
Each person’s story is different, and our approach always honours individual strengths, hopes, and dreams.
